The U.S. Concealed Carry Association Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision to Hear Critical Concealed Carry Case

Case “Goes To The Heart Of Americans’ Right To Keep Themselves And Their Families Safe At All Times”

West Bend, WI – The U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), which is one of the fastest growing organizations in the country advocating for responsibly-armed Americans, said today that the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear a major case regarding an individual’s right to carry a firearm for self-defense outside of their home represents a critical moment for all Americans who value safety and security.

“This is one of the most important Second Amendment cases to ever come before the Supreme Court because it goes to the heart of Americans’ right to keep themselves and their families safe at all times,” USCCA President and Founder Tim Schmidt said today.  “The fundamental, natural-born right to defend yourself or your family against harm simply does not end outside one’s home. It’s long past time for the nation’s highest Court to affirm that.”

The U.S. Supreme Court announced today that it will review a New York state law that imposes overly restrictive limits on law-abiding Americans’ ability to carry firearms outside their homes.  Specifically, New York requires concealed carry applicants to demonstrate “proper cause” to carry a firearm.  California, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island also have similar laws which prevent responsible Americans from protecting themselves.

Schmidt pointed to the record national gun sales over the last year and the explosion in demand for firearms education and training, as a growing movement among the American people of all backgrounds in support of self-protection.  “In these uncertain times, it’s clear that more and more Americans are taking responsibility for themselves and the safety of their families at all times.  That’s not only why this case before the Supreme Court is so important but also why Congress needs to pass common-sense reforms like national concealed carry reciprocity that are grounded in reality rather than anti-gun political ideology,” Schmidt said.

On behalf of its almost 600,000 members, Schmidt recently sent a letter and released a video message to President Biden pointing out that in the past year, nearly 5 million new gun owners have joined the more than 100 million Americans who already own guns.   In particular, women and minorities are now leading the way as the fastest-growing groups of concealed carry permit holders in the country and in membership at the USCCA.

Schmidt and the USCCA remain outspoken in their support for national concealed carry reciprocity so that responsible citizens can exercise their right to self-defense while they are traveling or temporarily living away from home.  This is especially important at a time when more Americans are opting out of air travel and choosing to drive long distances, often across multiple states, with their children and other loved ones.

In recent weeks, the USCCA has gathered over 250,000 petition signatures from Americans in support of national concealed carry reciprocity.  H.R. 38, The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2021, was recently introduced by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) to allow law-abiding Americans to protect themselves and their families at all times by ensuring that a concealed carry permit in one state is recognized in other states that allow residents to carry.
